| Exbury Gardens, England |
|
Exbury Gardens is perhaps the premier rhododendron display garden in the world. Located in the southwest of England near Southhampton it is bordered on one side by the Beaulieu River and the New Forest on the other. The gardens were developed by the late Lionel de Rothschild early in the 1900's and continues to this day. Open to the public it is comprised of 200 acres, chiefly woodland devoted to the genus Rhododendron. Exbury is divided into three main gardens, Home Wood, Witchers Wood and Yard Wood. As a breeder of rhododendrons de Rothschild created the flamboyant and largely hardy group of deciduous azaleas known as the Exbury Hybrids; these do well in many areas of Atlantic Canada. While other Exbury evergreen azalea and rhododendron hybrids are too tender for our area the sumptious scenes that follow will convert you forever to rhododendrons. Do take a brief walk through. A visitor once described Exbury Gardens as "Heaven with the gates open". Exbury website http://www.exbury.co.uk |
